Sam Bowie hadn’t seen the 2016-17 Kentucky Wildcats practice yet. He sat down along the sidelines of the men’s practice court at the Joe Craft Center and watched the team compete for a couple hours before hanging around afterward.
About 15 minutes after practice had concluded, Bowie was called over by head coach John Calipari to have a picture taken. The two shook hands and joked around before Calipari turned to face the camera while standing on the tips of his toes in order to gain a little bit of height next to the 7-foot-1 Bowie.
Coach Cal then walked Bowie over to meet the latest highly regarded Kentucky big man, UK freshman Bam Adebayo, who was working late after practice. A 6-10 physical specimen, Adebayo, perhaps for the first time in his life, looked average in size while he talked to Bowie and got a few pointers.
