Guffrie Smith, the father of Minnesota men’s basketball coach and former Kentucky coach Tubby Smith passed away in Maryland Sunday, according to a person with knowledge of the situation. Tubby Smith was the sixth of 17 children to Parthenia and Guffrie Smith. Guffrie Smith, who had been suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, had been awarded a Purple Heart after serving as an Army staff sergeant in World War II. He was 88 years old. Read article.
