March 30, 1996: One down, one to go after Cats topple No. 1 UMASS

In a game that many believed was 1996’s de facto national title game, UK was ranked No. 2, while John Calipari and UMass were No. 1. The matchup proved one of the most intensely fought college basketball games ever played. Avenging an early-season loss to Marcus Camby and crew, UK prevailed with – of all people – Mark Pope making the game’s pivotal two late foul shots.  Read article.

On This Day in UK Basketball History

On April 14, 2024, Mark Pope, a captain of the University of Kentucky’s 1996 National Championship team, is introduced as Kentucky’s new head basketball coach to a crowd of more than 15,000 fans inside of Rupp Arena. Pope replaces John Calipari, who left after 15 seasons at the helm of Kentucky basketball to become the head coach at Arkansas.
