It takes time and patience.
That’s why I defended Tyreke Evans when he struggled out of the gates a few years back as a freshman at Memphis. A year ago it was a similar scenario for Marquis Teague, again under John Calipari, this time at Kentucky.
Calipari’s point guards have needed maturity, mostly because they have been young and thrown into the deep end without a life preserver from the moment their college careers began. The lone exception might have been John Wall. Even Derrick Rose had his share of difficulties early in his college career with the Tigers. There was that game against O.J. Mayo in December when Rose hardly looked like a future NBA star — and plenty others when he struggled.
