A disappointing season came to a disappointing end Tuesday night in John Cailpari’s hometown of Moon Township, Pa. Less than a year after winning the 2012 national championship, Kentucky’s 2012-13 season finished with a thud in a 59-57 loss to Robert Morris in the first round of the National Invitation Tournament.
When Kyle Wiltjer’s 3-point shot in the final seconds clanked off the back iron, a record-setting 3,444 fans at the Charles L. Sewall Center stormed the court for the biggest win in Robert Morris history. Not even a year since the UK program ended its season in similar celebration, the Wildcats (21-12) fought their way through a sea of students and walked off the floor for the final time this year.
It was a season no one will soon forget, but for all the wrong reasons.
“This is disappointing, but it’s over now,” John Calipari said. “It’s done.”
