Michigan native James Young has always been a Wildcat

While his friends wore green or maize, James Young preferred Kentucky blue.

His homestate school was playing for a national championship Monday night, but James Young probably wasn’t paying that much attention.  The Detroit-area native didn’t grow up a Wolverines fan, despite the Ann Arbor campus being just an hour’s drive from his house.

has taken nearby to six Final Fours and won a national championship in Young’s lifetime, but he wasn’t a Spartans supporter either.

While his friends wore green or maize, Young preferred blue.

“It’s always been my school,” the McDonald’s All-American told the Herald-Leader last week. “I’ve had stuff forever. Even before Calipari, I always used to watch them — it was my dream school. So when he called and wanted me to go there, it was a blessing.”

On January 13, 2009, Jodie Meeks scored 54 points at Tennessee in a 90-72 victory for the most points in a single game by a Kentucky player. Meeks played 39 minutes and went 15-of-22 from the field, including 10-of-15 from behind the arc. He also didn't miss from the free-throw line, where he went 14-of-14.  He also hauled in eight rebounds and kicked out four assists.  The 54 points by Meeks was also the most points scored in an SEC game since Chris Jackson from LSU tallied 55 against Ole Miss in 1989.
