James Blackmon Sr. spent four seasons in the 1980s using the locker rooms at Rupp Arena as a basketball player at the University of Kentucky.
He and his son, James Jr., a four-star shooting guard with a scholarship offer from the Wildcats, got a fresh look at them on Thursday during an unofficial recruiting visit to Lexington, but a recent multimillion-dollar renovation has rendered the Cats’ current are a little more posh and high-tech than back in James Sr.’s day.
“My dad was real surprised at how things have changed, and he was kind of mad how the locker room looks so much better,” said James Blackmon Jr., a former longtime Indiana University commitment who attends Marion (Ind.) High School.
Blackmon Jr., whose father is his coach at Marion, where James Sr. was a former McDonald’s All American, said the opportunity to attend the same college as his dad isn’t much of a factor in his recruitment, but he enjoyed seeing some of his dad’s old stomping grounds.
