Eleven preseason practices have revealed some surprises for University of Kentucky basketball coach John Calipari. The jewel of his sparkling freshman class, power forward Julius Randle, has lost a little “swagger” as he works to reshape his game. Some have wondered if Randle is the best player in the country “but we’ve got guys on our team playing better right now,” his coach said at the team’s media day Tuesday.
With veterans Willie Cauley-Stein and Alex Poythress just now returning to practice from hand and hamstring injuries, respectively, James Young and Marcus Lee, two less-heralded newcomers — a relative term, as both were also McDonald’s All Americans — have excelled so far.
Young, a 6-foot-6 swingman, continues to look like the Wildcats’ best player.
