Julius Randle had just pulled off one of the best debuts in Kentucky history.
With 23 points and 15 rebounds – a double-double to start his career – Randle finished just two points shy of Terrence Jones’ record for points in a UK debut and two boards short of Sam Bowie’s first-game rebound record. He was nothing short of dominant, dynamic and destructive in Kentucky’s season-opening victory, and yet John Calipari wanted more.
“He could have had 20, 21, 22 rebounds, so why not do that?” Calipari said. “Why not open up with a 20-20, because when the shot went up he stopped playing. He stopped.”
Well, he only stopped some of the time.
