started the season on the end of the University of basketball team’s bench. He was the 10th man on a loaded roster. But after getting just 16 combined minutes in the fourth-ranked Wildcats’ first three games, Hawkins has played 18 and 13 minutes in the past two.

And for one simple reason: “I actually love defense,” Hawkins said.

coach has not loved the team’s defense so far – particularly on the perimeter – so the 6-foot Hawkins, former Mr. Basketball, has been taking away minutes from his taller and more touted fellow guards. He has one ferocious block and two steals, which have been at a premium for the Cats (4-1), in the past two games.
