John Calipari’s University of Kentucky basketball team has won 7 of 8 games, climbed back up to No. 11 in both the Associated Press and coaches polls and appears to be putting together all its talented pieces just in time for a challenging week on the road – at LSU on Tuesday (weather permitting) and at Missouri on Saturday.
Calipari said the Wildcats (15-4, 5-1 Southeastern Conference) are “prepared” after following up Saturday’s 25-point rout of Georgia with a vigorous practice on Sunday. That’s a clear sign to the coach that his players are finally starting to understand what it takes.
“We’re getting to where every day you can try to get better because we’re not fighting it,” Calipari said. “We’re trying to get our guys to say, ‘This is who we want to be. Here’s the mental picture. Let’s go for this.’ And they’re trying. (Sunday), we walked off and said, ‘Man, day after a game and that kind of practice?’ Tells me a lot about where they are mentally.”
