Alex Poythress’s goal was to give back to his community and put a smile on the faces of Byrns-Darden Elementary students Friday as he volunteered at a fun-filled day of activities.

Byrns-Darden held their Field Day Friday morning, and in their gym, Poythress, a University of Kentucky basketball player and Northeast High School alum, was present to coach and cheer on students as they competed against their classmates in a basketball shooting challenge.

Students raced to shoot from the free throw line and do a lay up before their teammates. Squeals and screams of excitement filled the gym.

Many looked up at the 6’8” basketball forward in amazement and welcomed the many high fives and words of encouragement from Poythress and volunteers Kameron Johnson and Zayvion Williams from Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated.
