Kerry Benson was born on March 25, 1989, to Terry and Kelly Benson.

Benson played high school ball at Louisville’s Pleasure Ridge Park High where he averaged 15.5 points, 8.1 rebounds, 3.2 steals and 2.9 assists his senior season.  He was named All-Sixth Region in 2007 and was the PRP High School team MVP in 2007.  He played in the Kentucky-Ohio All-Stars game in 2007.

Benson got the attention of then-Kentucky coach Tubby Smith who invited Benson to walk on to the team.  That offer was extended by new Kentucky coach Billy Gillispie.  A lifelong UK fan, Benson turned down several scholarship offers to become a walk-on at Kentucky.  “Even though I grew up in Louisville, I was a Kentucky fan,” Benson said. “I am definitely living a dream.  I had an opportunity to go to a school where I could basically be a star eventually, but with Kentucky, it’s just the tradition. I knew how this was going to be — being a walk-on — but I am just trying to work hard and have fun.”

Benson played 14 minutes in the victory against Central Arkansas on November 6, 2007, and scored 3 points.

Benson left the basketball team after practice on Thursday, November 22, 2007, and never returned. Gillispie confirmed on Novermber 26, 2007 that Benson had quit the team but would continue to take classes at UK.

Benson transferred to the University of Louisville and graduated with a degree in physical therapy.

Benson was killed in a car crash in March of 2014.  He was 24 years old.
