Doron Lamb anything but a bench player

Technically speaking, Doron Lamb is a bench player, in the sense that he begins the game with his warmups on as five other UK players step on the floor for tipoff. But there’s nothing about his game that says he’s a benchwarmer. Lamb, who set the UK freshman record with 32 points Wednesday in a win against Winthrop, is averaging 14.2 points in 28.1 minutes. And he’s become the master of coming off the bench.

Doron Lamb’s record night leads Kentucky past Winthrop, 89-52

Doron Lamb set a Kentucky record for most points by a freshman, scoring 32 as the 13th-ranked Wildcats rolled by Winthrop 89-52 on Wednesday. Lamb broke the record of 31 set by Jamal Mashburn on Feb. 3, 1991 against Georgia on a nifty layup that put the Wildcats up by 28 with 6:38 remaining. He walked off to a standing ovation moments later after making 11 of 12 field goals, including 7 of 8 3-pointers.

When Adolph Rupp won 1,234 games

The day Adolph Rupp won his 1,234th college basketball game, it rained all day. Inside Vanderbilt’s Memorial Gymnasium, the drops thumped away like a drumline, perhaps a subtle suggestion that time marched on that night. Rupp waited out of sight during warmups as nervous as when he had coached his first game against Georgetown College 42 years earlier. He would describe that pregame feeling often, like a sudden hook to the belly.

On this day in Kentucky basketball history: Win #2,000!!!

Kentucky’s 2,000th victory looked awfully familiar. DeMarcus Cousins and Patrick Patterson scored 18 points apiece and the third-ranked Wildcats became the first team in NCAA history to reach the 2,000-win plateau with an 88-44 romp over Drexel on Monday night.

Cats welcome former Cat back to Rupp

For the second time this year, the Wildcats welcome back one of their own to Rupp Arena, as former UK standout Sean Woods brings his Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils to Lexington. Earlier this year, in UK’s second exhibition game, the Cats took on former Wildcat Dale Brown’s Dillard Bleu Devils. Kentucky enters the weekend on a two-game win…
