Adam Chiles was born on December 16, 1982, to Yvette and Marion Childs. He had Blount’s Syndrome as a toddler, a bone growth disease that made him bow-legged and awkward but that didn’t stop him from starting basketball and baseball at the age of eight.
Chiles played his high school basketball at Ballard in Louisville where he was an All-State performer averaging 16.1 points, 5.1 assists, 4.5 rebounds and 31. steals his senior year. Ballard finished his career at Ballard ranked 12th in scoring with 1,293 points. The Bruins were 90-13 during his career.
On April 17, 2001, in front of a whole host of family and friends, Chiles signed a letter of intent to play at Kentucky. He chose Kentucky over Cincinnati and Maryland. He was the first Ballard basketball player to ever sign with Kentucky. “To finally have my name on this national letter-of-intent to the University of Kentucky means the waiting is over. It’s time to go at it. The off-season is the most important season; I want to be ready.”
Chiles missed much of the summer conditioning drills because of back pain so he was out of shape when school started. Coach Tubby Smith was disappointed in Chiles’ conditioning and contemplated redshirting him. At the beginning of November, Chiles was suspended one game for violating an unspecified team rule. Shortly thereafter, starter J.P. Blevins broke his wrist and Chiles suddenly became the backup to Gerald Fitch who took over a starting role. This ended any thoughts of red-shirting Chiles. Chiles played a spotless 5 minutes against Duke and followed that with an equally impressive four-minute stint against Indiana. He dished a career-high four assists against Louisville in a fairly solid eight-minute stint.
On March 7, 2002, Chiles was suspended from the team, at least his third suspension, for undisclosed disciplinary reasons. Coach Smith stated on March 11, that he would make a decision regarding Chiles’ status after the season was over.
At season’s end, Chiles had seen 84 minutes of action in 16 games. He scored 11 points and had 14 assists and 15 turnovers. In May 2002, Coach Smith announced that Chiles would be released from his scholarship to pursue his college playing career elsewhere. Chiles announced that he would transfer to Vincennes Junior College.
