66 Bill Bibb

Bill Bibb was born on July 27, 1933, in Owensboro, Kentucky, to Charles Owen Bibb and Mary Galloway Bibb. He starred at Owensboro High School as an All-State basketball player and also excelled in baseball before enrolling at the University of Kentucky in 1952. A 6-foot-4 forward under Hall of Fame coach Adolph Rupp, Bibb developed into a dependable reserve known for his rebounding, play around the basket, and willingness to carry out every assignment. He also lettered in baseball, serving as Kentucky’s regular first baseman.

Bibb appeared in 21 varsity games during his Kentucky career, including 16 contests for the Wildcats’ undefeated 1953-54 national championship team. Entering the 1954-55 season, he was one of Kentucky’s six returning lettermen and was expected to assume a larger role following the graduation of several championship stars. Seeking increased playing time, he transferred to Kentucky Wesleyan after the season.

At Kentucky Wesleyan, Bibb blossomed into an Associated Press All-American and helped lead the Panthers to the NCAA College Division championship game in 1957. He then embarked on a distinguished career in collegiate athletics, serving as head basketball coach and athletic director at Mercer University, where his 222 victories remain the most in program history. Bibb later became commissioner of the Trans America Athletic Conference, now the ASUN Conference, helping guide the league’s growth until his retirement in 2006. In recognition of his decades of contributions to college athletics, he was inducted into the ASUN Hall of Fame in 2016.
