12 Billy Ray Cassady

Billy Ray Cassady was born on June 11, 1935, in Inez, Kentucky, to Robert and Rachel Spears Cassady. A 6-foot-2 forward-guard, he developed into one of the Commonwealth’s premier high school basketball players while starring at Inez High School. Cassady captained the Indians to the 1954 Kentucky state championship, earned First Team All-State and State Tournament All-Tournament honors, and scored 843 points as a senior to finish with a school-record 2,295 career points. He also led Inez to the Louisville Invitational Tournament championship, earned all-tournament honors, competed in the Kentucky-Indiana, North-South, and East-West all-star games, was named the “Star of Stars” Most Valuable Player following the Kentucky-Indiana All-Star Game, and received second-team high school All-America recognition before signing with Adolph Rupp’s defending NCAA champions at Kentucky.

After spending the 1954-55 season on Harry Lancaster’s freshman team, where he finished second in scoring with 137 points while helping the Kittens compile an 8-4 record, Cassady joined Kentucky’s varsity and lettered from 1955-56 through 1957-58. A smooth left-handed shooter praised by the Wildcats’ coaching staff as one of the team’s finest set shooters, he developed into a dependable member of Rupp’s rotation, helping Kentucky win three Southeastern Conference championships and capture the 1958 NCAA national championship. Cassady appeared in 54 varsity games, scoring 169 career points while shooting 47.5 percent from the field and an outstanding 81.4 percent from the free-throw line. His finest collegiate performance came against Georgia on February 27, 1956, when he scored a career-high 16 points on eight field goals. In addition to basketball, he also played baseball at Kentucky, seeing action in both the infield and outfield, and graduated in 1958 with a Bachelor of Arts in Education, majoring in Physical Education with additional study in Biological Sciences.

Following graduation, Cassady began his coaching career at Louisa High School, where he guided the Bulldogs to a victory in his debut as head coach during the 1958-59 season. He later returned to Martin County, where he worked for Wolf Creek Collieries Coal Company until retiring following a kidney transplant. Throughout his life, he remained closely connected to his alma mater as a member of the University of Kentucky Basketball Alumni Association while also belonging to the Inez Masonic Lodge and Golden Memorial Methodist Church.

Cassady died on November 26, 1997, at the Ohio State University Medical Center at the age of 62. He was survived by his wife, Donna Sue Callaham Cassady; sons William M. Cassady and Carlos R. Cassady; and three grandsons. He was buried in Saltwell Cemetery in Inez, remembered as one of the greatest athletes in his hometown’s history—a Kentucky high school state champion, an NCAA national champion, and an educator and coach who carried the lessons learned under Adolph Rupp throughout his life.
