Bryce Hopkins was born September 7, 2001, in Downers Grove, Illinois, and grew up in nearby Oak Park. The son of Karen and former Tennessee Tech basketball player Clyde Hopkins, he starred at Fenwick High School, averaging 24.4 points, 12.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 1.8 steals and 1.5 blocks as a senior. Hopkins led Fenwick to a Catholic League championship, earned conference MVP and MaxPreps Illinois Player of the Year honors, and became a consensus four-star, top-50 prospect before choosing Kentucky.
The 6-foot-6, 225-pound forward appeared in 28 games for the Wildcats as a freshman in 2021–22, averaging 2.1 points and 1.4 rebounds in 6.5 minutes per game. Although he played behind an experienced Kentucky frontcourt, Hopkins supplied physical rebounding and scoring off the bench. His finest performance came against LSU, when he scored a career-high 13 points on 5-of-6 shooting and collected four rebounds in 16 important minutes, helping Kentucky erase an 11-point second-half deficit in a 71–66 victory.
Hopkins transferred to Providence after the season and quickly developed into one of the Big East’s best forwards. He started all 33 games in 2022–23, led the Friars in scoring, rebounding and double-doubles, and earned first-team All-Big East, NABC All-District and USBWA All-District honors. His signature performance was a 29-point, 23-rebound effort in a double-overtime victory over Marquette. Hopkins remained productive over the next two seasons, but knee injuries—including a torn ACL suffered in January 2024—limited him to 17 games.
After transferring to St. John’s for his final collegiate season, Hopkins helped the Red Storm capture the 2026 Big East regular-season and tournament championships and reach the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16. He earned second-team All-Big East, Big East All-Tournament and Academic All-America honors while averaging 13.6 points and 6.2 rebounds. In an NCAA Tournament victory over Kansas, he scored 18 points and made a St. John’s tournament-record six 3-pointers.
The Denver Nuggets selected Hopkins with the 49th overall pick in the second round of the 2026 NBA Draft, completing a journey from lightly used Kentucky reserve to accomplished Big East standout and professional prospect.
