Cory Sears was born in Hammond, Indiana on March 19, 1980, to Don and Jayne Sears. He played for the University of Kentucky Wildcats in the early 2000s.
In high school, Sears averaged 20.5 points, eight rebounds, five assists, and three steals as a senior at Corbin high school in Corbin, Kentucky, earning mention to the AP All-State team. He led the Redhounds to a 26-5 record in 1999 and was named the Southeast Kentucky Conference Player of the Year. He also made the 13th Region All-Tournament team for the second consecutive season and the 13th Region All “A” Tournament team. As a junior, he led Corbin to a 21-9 record while averaging 17.4 points, 5.0 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game. Sears lettered all three years for the Redhounds and started as a junior and senior. As a sophomore, he was the sixth man on the 13th Region Champions and played in the Sweet 16 State Basketball Tournament. He was coached in high school by Mike Deaton, the former UK quarterback (1977-78).
In prep school at Hargrave Military Academy, Cory Sears averaged 16.5 points and 5.0 rebounds per game in helping Hargrave to a 20-3 record in 2000. He played both guard and small forward while starting over half the season. He was one of 12 players at Hargrave to earn a Division 1 scholarship.
Sears accepted a scholarship offer from coach Tubby Smith on July 22, 2000. He became the fifth freshman on the Wildcats’ 2000-01 roster, joining Cliff Hawkins, Gerald Fitch, Erik Daniels, and Matt Heissenbuttel.
During his time at Kentucky, Cory Sears played a total of 18 games over two seasons, from 2000 to 2002. In the 2000-01 season, he played 10 games and scored 2 points. The following season, 2001-02, he played 8 games and scored 6 points.
After his sophomore season at Kentucky, Sears transferred to Union College, where he continued his basketball career.
