Obituary – Ercel Little, Madisonville Messenger

Ercel B. Little, 79, of 107 Highland Drive, died 12:35 a.m. today in Regional Medical Center.

Born in Livingston County, August 14, 1908, he was the son of the late Dallas Hickman Little and Elizabeth Watson Little.

He was a retired assistant principal at Madisonville North Hopkins High School; member of the First Baptist Church, the Baracca Sunday school class; former deacon of Marion Baptist Church; played basketball for the University of Kentucky under Adolph Rupp’s first two teams; member of the University of Kentucky Alumni, former principal of Crittenden County High School.

He is survived by his wife, Dimple Watson Little, 107 Highland Drive; one daughter, Betty J. Wilhite, Calhoun; one son and daughter-in-law, Dwight P. and Kay Brinkley Little, Madisonville; and five grandchildren, Doug, Mike, David and Laura Wilhite, and Bryan Little.

Services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, October 17 at Barnett-Strother Funeral Home, with Dr. H. Garrison Coltharp officiating. Graveside service will take place at 3 p.m. Saturday at Maple View Cemetery in Marion, Ky.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday until the funeral hour at the funeral home.

Walter Cornett, of Glendale, Kentucky, is the owner and operator of Walter’s Wildcat World. He founded WildcatWorld.com in 1998 making it one of the oldest Kentucky basketball fan sites in operation today.

On This Day in UK Basketball History

On February 18, 1903, State College (Kentucky) records its first win, an 11-10 decision over Lexington YMCA. The Wildcats finished that first season with a 1-2 record.

 

On February 18, 1909, with a 28-23 win over Cincinnati, Kentucky clinched its first winning season in school history. Following a “Senior Day” loss to Central University, the Wildcats ended the year with a 5-4 record.

 

On February 18, 1950, Bill Spivey scored 40 points against Georgia Tech.
