Garland Townes was born Garland Roy Townes, Jr. on July 10, 1925, in Hazard, Kentucky to Emma and Garland Roy Townes, Sr. Townes played for coach Adolph Rupp from 1947-50 and was a reserve guard on the 1948 and 1949 national championship teams.
Townes, also known as “Spec,” was described as a fast, slick, six-footer. He worked his way up from the “B Squad,” which Adolph Rupp used as practice competition for the varsity in the late 1940’s, to the varsity. He was recognized as one of the best defensive men on the team, known for his ability to tie up his man on the floor. In November of 1948, coach Adolph Rupp said Townes was a new face to watch for as he was pushing Dale Barnstable for a starting position. During the same month, the Harlan Daily Enterprise described him as a guard who “hustles all the time.”
Townes died Saturday, February 24, 2018, in Indialantic, Florida. He was 92 years old.
