From the 1954 University of Kentucky Basketball Media Guide:

Relegated to the second team of the All-State selections during his senior year at Madison High in nearby Richmond, Coy has made the big jump to college ball successfully and seems destined to provide the nation’s number one collegiate cage aggregation with plenty of help . . . He has proven himself to possess plenty of scrap, a good shooting eye and has the height (6-1) to take care of himself under the boards . . . Like other U.K. freshmen, Coy spent last year practicing and did not see any game action – a factor that may handicap or help him in his first varsity campaign . . . In the off season, he toils on the mound for the Wildcat baseball forces of Asst. Basketball and Head Baseball Coach Harry Lancaster.
