Paul Adkins

Paul Adkins was born on August 27, 1899, in Williamsburg, Kentucky, the son of Dr. and Mrs. J.D. Adkins. Growing up in Whitley County, he developed into a standout multi-sport athlete in his hometown. Adkins began his collegiate career nearby at Cumberland College, where he earned his first basketball letter while completing two years of study before transferring to the University of Kentucky to join the Wildcats.

A 6-foot-2 center, Adkins made an immediate impact upon stepping onto the court in Lexington for the 1920–21 season, helping anchor Kentucky’s frontcourt during a pivotal era in program history. Over two seasons with the Wildcats, he appeared in 28 games and compiled 269 total points. Adkins was recognized as an All-SIAA Tournament selection following his junior campaign and earned All-Southern honors in his 1921–22 senior season. His athletic versatility extended well beyond the hardcourt, as he also competed for Kentucky as a baseball player and captured a state collegiate tennis championship. Adkins’s offensive prowess was showcased in several dominant performances, including a 20-point effort against Georgetown College in February 1921 and a career-high 22-point game against Virginia Military on February 9, 1922.

Following his time in Lexington, Adkins pursued a career in medicine, graduating from the University of Louisville Medical School where he also captained the medical school basketball team. He went on to dedicate his life to public service as a physician in Bell County, serving as president of the Bell County Medical Society and remaining a beloved figure in Eastern Kentucky until his passing in 1962.
