Rick Drewitz was born Richard Allen Drewitz on March 7, 1952, in Garden City, Michigan. He was a forward-center who played for the University of Kentucky Wildcats in the early 1970s. Standing at 6 feet 7 inches tall and weighing 190 pounds, Drewitz was known for his dedication and hard work on the court.
Drewitz’s basketball journey began in Garden City, Michigan, where he attended Garden City West High School. He averaged 29.7 points and 18.7 rebounds a game his senior year. He led Garden City to a 22-1 record as a senior. Drewitz set 30 school records in his two year career. His impressive performance in high school basketball earned him the title of Michigan’s Mr. Basketball in 1970 and a spot on the University of Kentucky Wildcats team.
Drewitz joined the Wildcats in the 1971-72 season and played through the 1973-74 season. During his time at Kentucky, he played as a forward-center and was known for his versatility and team spirit. He played in 47 games and scored 101 points total over his Kentucky career. His contributions to the team were valuable, and he was a respected member of the Wildcats.
After his collegiate basketball career, Drewitz became factory manager for Jockey International in Cynthiana and later in Carlisle. Drewitz was also a part-time reporter for the Bourbon County Citizen Advertiser in Paris. In 1988, he was named the area director of the Prison Fellowship Ministries (PFM), the international Christian outreach to prisoners, ex-prisoners and their families.
Although Drewitz’s college basketball career may not have been filled with individual accolades, his dedication to the team and his role as a supportive player left a lasting impression on his teammates and coaches. His commitment to the game and his team-first mentality are remembered fondly by those who knew him.
