Thomas Beatty was born Thomas Elmer Beatty on April 4, 1891, in Lexington, Kentucky, to William D. Beatty and Lydia Belle “Lettie” Beatty. He was a member of the University of Kentucky Wildcats men’s basketball team during the 1910–1911 and 1911–1912 seasons. While detailed records from that era are scarce, his inclusion on the roster during these formative years contributed to the foundation and development of Kentucky’s basketball program.
Beatty was a multi-sport athlete while at Kentucky, participating in baseball and basketball from 1910 to 1912. He graduated from Kentucky on June 6, 1912, with a bachelor’s of mechanical engineering.
He was accepted for Army service by the local exemption board in Georgetown, Kentucky, in August of 1917 and was sent to Camp Sherman, a military training site near Chillicothe, Ohio. On April 24, 1918, Second Lieutenant Beatty reported to the Infantry Replacement Camp at Camp Gordon, Georgia. In September of 1918, he was promoted to First Lieutenant.
By 1920 he was living in Oakland, California working as an electrical engineer.
He was a payroll clerk for MACCO before his retirement and a member of the American Legion Post 43 of Hollywood. He passed away on March 1, 1977, at the age of 85 in Vista, California, where he had lived for five years.
