Brandon Knight’s early struggles cause for concern for Kentucky

If there was one thing Calipari wanted to quell this offseason, it was comparisons between Brandon Knight and John Wall. It wasn’t fair, he’d often say. They are different players. Initially, there was little concern over transitioning from Wall to Knight. Why should there have been considering Calipari’s recent success with the position?
Calipari says selfish play doomed Cats against UConn
It had been a long time since John Calipari took a beating as thorough as the one given to Kentucky by Connecticut Wednesday night in the finals of the Maui Invitational. Selfish play by a young team that has not learned how to handle adversity was the driving force behind the Cats 84-67 loss, according to the coach, who discussed the game during an audio tweet released Thursday.

Kentucky holds off Washington, advances to finals of Maui Invitational
Terrence Jones had 16 points and 17 rebounds, and Brandon Knight scored 24 points to help No. 8 Kentucky hold off No. 13 Washington 74-67 in the Maui Invitational semifinals Tuesday night. A 4.7 earthquake centered on the Big Island shook courtside tables and chairs with about 6 minutes left, but play continued and few people in the gym seemed to notice. They were too busy watching the back-and-forth action. Kentucky (4-0) had an abysmal night from 3-point range – 3-for-17 – but smothered Washington on the perimeter defensively and came up with all the big plays down the stretch. The Wildcats move on to the championship game against Connecticut, which knocked off No. 2 Michigan State in a rough-and-tumble first semifinal.

The Spectrum, site of the 1992 loss to Duke, goes under the wrecking ball

The Spectrum in Philadelphia was the site of one of the most memorable games in NCAA tournament history, Kentucky vs. Duke in the 1992 East Regionals. And now, the Philadelphia Spectrum is no more. From Rushthecourt.net, “The sports world gave up another one of its landmark venues to the way of progress today as The Philadelphia Spectrum felt the crash of the wrecking ball while several of the men who filled it with memories, including Julius Erving and Bernie Parent, watched the destruction from a safe distance. This 47-year old warhorse ends a distinguished career as one of the most versatile sports and music arenas ever built.”

The Wildcats also were careless at times, nearly blowing all of an 18-point lead as Oklahoma (3-1) fought its way back.
