Kentucky and North Carolina – Two of the Winningest Programs Battle

Gameday

Two of the winningest teams in college basketball face off Saturday when the Wildcats (2,028 wins – 1st) take on the Tar Heels (2,007 wins – 3rd) in Chapel Hill in a nationally televised contest on CBS. Kentucky enters the match-up having won five of its first six games, including a second-place finish in the EA Sports Maui Invitational.

Terrence Jones was nation’s best freshman for November

Terrence Jones

When you beat Duke’s Kyrie Irving (who has seamlessly replaced and remade the Blue Devils’ point guard spot) and Jared Sullinger (whose interior offensive efficiency might win Ohio State a national title this year) you know you’re doing something right. Jones is. The Kentucky freshman gets the nod over Irving, Sullinger and a handful of other frosh for not only excelling but doing so without the help of a team full of skilled veterans surrounding him.

‘Mother hen’ Josh Harrellson embracing ‘garbage man’ role

Josh Harrellson preferred people call him the “garbage man” for his suddenly changing role. Boston coach Patrick Chambers had a different idea after Harrellson’s 12-point, 11-rebound performance in Kentucky’s 91-57 win over Boston on Tuesday: mother hen. “I love that kid,” Chambers said postgame. “He does everything that you want a center or a big man to do. He plays ball screens great, he rebounds the basketball, he blocks shots. He’s the mother hen out there.”

Adolph Rupp about to be passed by Coach Krzyzewski in all-time wins

Mike Krzyzewski

Hate to report this but we all knew it would come to fruition sooner or later. Mike Krzyzewski is one of just six coaches in Division I history to reach 800 career wins. His 874 wins rank fourth among college basketball’s victory leaders and first among active coaches. Krzyzewski is three wins shy of passing Adolph Rupp for third place all-time. Krzyzewski is six wins shy of passing Dean Smith as the winningest coach in ACC history.

Boston’s halftime celebration inspires Cats second-half explosion

Kentucky may not have learned a lesson in Maui, but it apparently learned a way to get inspired during halftime. The Wildcats vowed they would not have another listless performance like the one they had in the Maui Invitational title game when they lost 84-67 to Connecticut. Yet at halftime…

Kentucky rolls Boston 91-57 with strong second half

Brandon Knight scored 23 points and No. 10 Kentucky bounced back from its first loss of the season with a 91-57 win over Boston University on Tuesday night. Terrence Jones added 18 points and 11 rebounds for the Wildcats (5-1), who shot 59 percent from the field and overwhelmed the Terriers (4-4) over the final 20 minutes. Kentucky led by just seven points at halftime before opening the second half on an 18-3 run to break things open.

More info on DeMarcus Cousins getting kicked out of practice

DeMarcus Cousins

When the Kings debated drafting DeMarcus Cousins fifth overall out of Kentucky in the June draft, they were well aware that the decision was a classic risk-vs.-reward quandary. Four-plus months after taking the risk and hoping for the reward, the former is far outweighing the latter.
