12 Al Robinson

Al Robinson was born Alford Merritt Robinson on February 17, 1938, in Fayette County, Kentucky, to Roscoe Merritt Robinson and Louise Hurt Robinson. He grew up in Lexington, where he attended Lafayette High School before joining Adolph Rupp’s basketball program at the University of Kentucky. A 6-foot-1, 185-pound guard, Robinson wore No. 12 and was a member of the Wildcats during the 1958-59 and 1959-60 seasons as Kentucky rebuilt following its 1958 NCAA championship.

Although Robinson saw limited varsity action, he earned the respect of Kentucky’s coaching staff through his work ethic and team-first attitude. The Wildcats’ 1959-60 official basketball program described him as “a valuable asset to the team,” calling him “a willing competitor” who understood his role and “did a good job within the limits of his ability.” During the previous season, he appeared in nine games and scored six points, including four against Georgia. Those contributions reflected the importance of dependable role players who helped strengthen Kentucky’s program during one of Adolph Rupp’s transitional periods.

Following his playing days, Robinson remained deeply devoted to Kentucky basketball. His passion for Kentucky basketball led him to build an extensive library of opponent game films, recording thousands of games each year for the coaching staff. His work supported Hall of Fame coaches Joe B. Hall, Rick Pitino, and Tubby Smith, while former players and graduate assistants affectionately nicknamed him “The Legend” and “Hollywood.” During John Calipari’s tenure, Robinson became such a fixture at Kentucky practices that the staff reserved a seat for him.

Robinson’s lifelong dedication to the Wildcats earned him one of the program’s most meaningful honors when he received the Bill Keightley Award during the 2004-05 season. Presented annually to an individual who exemplifies the pride, respect, and positive attributes associated with Kentucky basketball, the award recognized Robinson’s decades of quiet service and unwavering loyalty to the program. More than four decades after wearing the Blue and White as a player, he continued to make an impact behind the scenes, earning the admiration and friendship of generations of Kentucky coaches, players, and staff. Robinson passed away on August 18, 2026 at the age of 88.
