Arlan King was born on April 11, 1930, in Jefferson, Pennsylvania, to Homer Rupert King and Thelma Venorah Stucker King. He was part of the University of Kentucky Wildcats during the 1949–50 season.
King graduated from Saluda High School in 1948 before joining the Wildcats.
Standing 6-foot-3 and weighing 185 pounds, King played as a forward. During his sophomore year at Kentucky, he appeared in 10 games, averaging 0.5 points and 1.2 rebounds per game.
The 1949–50 Wildcats, under the leadership of Coach Adolph Rupp, achieved a commendable 25–5 record, securing both the Southeastern Conference (SEC) regular-season and tournament championships. They concluded the season ranked 3rd in the final AP Poll.
King transferred to Hanover College after his sophomore season to continue his academic and athletic pursuits.
He earned his Bachelor’s degree in education from Hanover College in 1953. He was in Phi Gamma Delta fraternity while at Hanover. He earned his Master’s degree in 1960 from Indiana University. He was a Korean War veteran serving in the US Army from 1953-1955.
Bud was a lifetime educator. He was a teacher and coach for 39 years.
He passed away on April 10, 2021, in Rushville, Indiana, at the age of 90.
