2 Devin Askew

Devin Askew was born on July 26, 2002, in Los Angeles, California, and grew up in Sacramento before starring at Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana. A gifted point guard, he earned Trinity League Player of the Year honors and first-team All-CIF recognition as a senior while averaging 16.7 points, 6.3 assists and 4.9 rebounds per game. Askew was regarded as one of the nation’s premier recruits, originally ranking as the consensus No. 1 point guard in the 2021 class before reclassifying into the 2020 class, where ESPN rated him the No. 26 overall prospect. He also earned selection to the Jordan Brand Classic and helped lead Mater Dei to a CIF Open Division Southern California Regional championship as a sophomore.

Arriving at Kentucky as one of the youngest players in college basketball, Askew stepped immediately into a demanding role during the challenging 2020-21 season. The freshman guard appeared in all 25 games and started 20, finishing second on the team with 73 assists while leading the Wildcats in assists in 16 contests. His steady ball handling and willingness to shoulder point guard responsibilities gave Kentucky stability in the backcourt, and he showed consistent growth throughout the season before entering the transfer portal after his freshman year.

Askew’s best performances in a Kentucky uniform came as his confidence grew during SEC play. He scored a season-high 14 points with four assists against Tennessee, recorded 12 points in his collegiate debut against Morehead State, and delivered 11 points with a career-high seven assists in Kentucky’s double-overtime victory at Mississippi State. After leaving Lexington, Askew continued his collegiate career at Texas, California and Long Beach State. He later enjoyed a breakout season at Long Beach State, where he emerged as one of the Big West’s top guards and earned College Sports Communicators Academic All-District honors, demonstrating the resilience and persistence that defined his basketball journey.
