Arthur Donan was born Arthur Liston Donan on March 27, 1885, in Three Springs, Kentucky to Dr. David Crews Donan and Victoria Grady Donan.
Donan attended the University of Kentucky where he played both baseball and basketball. He also managed the football team in 1906-07. He was a member of Tau Beta Pi and the Union Literary Society. He graduated on June 6, 1907, as a civil and mining engineer. After graduation, he moved to Providence, Kentucky to work for the Providence Mining Company. He later was superintendent of Providence Mining Company No. 2 and No. 3 and also Luton Mines.
He picked up the nickname and rank of Captain when he organized Company F of the National Guard in Providence and then served in World War I in France.
He also coached the first football team in Providence; he also managed baseball teams and played baseball for several teams in the community.
He was married in 1910 to Elizabeth Sugg of Morganfield.
He passed away on December 23, 1967, in Providence, Kentucky, at the age of 82.
