Billie Jackson was born on December 5, 1917, in Anderson, Indiana, to James Franklin Jackson and Elizabeth Ladonia “Betty” O’Hern Jackson. A standout at Anderson High School, he helped the Indians earn a berth in the 1936 Indiana state basketball finals. Listed at 5-foot-11 and 160 pounds as a high school senior, he later grew to 6 feet and 175 pounds before enrolling at the University of Kentucky.
A guard, Jackson joined Adolph Rupp’s Wildcats for the 1938–39 season. He appeared in varsity action during the year, seeing playing time in victories over Georgetown College and Kentucky Wesleyan during December 1938. Though his opportunities were limited, he earned a place on one of Rupp’s early Kentucky squads.
After leaving Kentucky, Jackson returned to Indiana and was a member of Anderson’s Purnell-Graham industrial basketball team in 1939. He later worked as a machinist for Chrysler Corporation after moving to Indianapolis. Jackson died in 1968 at the age of 50, leaving behind a legacy that stretched from one of Indiana’s premier high school basketball programs to the University of Kentucky.
