12 Bo Lanter

Bo Lanter was born on September 4, 1959, in Versailles, Kentucky. A standout multi-sport athlete at Woodford County High School, he earned three letters in basketball, six in tennis, and one in football while helping lead the Yellow Jackets to two regional basketball championships. As a senior, he averaged 20 points per game, was named the All-Central Kentucky Conference Most Valuable Player, and twice earned All-Central Kentucky Conference honors. Following high school, Lanter enrolled at Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas.

After one season at Midwestern State, Lanter transferred to the University of Kentucky as a walk-on. He appeared in 11 games during the 1978-79 season before earning a scholarship through hard work and perseverance. Over the next three seasons, he became a dependable reserve guard for Joe B. Hall’s Wildcats, lettering from 1979-80 through 1981-82 while helping Kentucky capture consecutive Southeastern Conference regular-season championships in 1980 and 1981. Known for his maturity and steady play, Hall frequently praised Lanter’s work ethic and leadership, noting before his senior season that his experience would continue to make him an important contributor off the bench.

Lanter saw action in 58 career games, scoring 23 points while providing depth in Kentucky’s backcourt behind Dirk Minniefield and Jim Master. Although his role rarely showed up in the box score, he was respected as a reliable teammate whose persistence embodied the walk-on spirit. During his senior year, he received the Sixth Man Award following Kentucky’s victory over Akron after scoring a career-high eight points. He graduated from Kentucky in 1982 with a degree in business administration.

Following college, Lanter built a successful career in business and entrepreneurship. He owned Water Energizers Network Inc. before later inventing and patenting Discwear, an interchangeable sports-logo system for hats and apparel that combined licensed team logos with collectible inserts. The product was licensed by the University of Kentucky and marketed to collegiate and professional sports organizations, including presentations to companies such as Nike and Starter. Lanter later entered commercial real estate, joining The Coleman Group as a commercial sales and leasing agent in the Lexington area.

Basketball remained a family tradition. Lanter and his wife, Joy Wade Lanter, raised two children who competed at the Division I level. His son, Samuel “Tod” Lanter III, fulfilled a lifelong dream by earning a place on Kentucky’s basketball team as a walk-on in 2012, while his daughter, Kyndall, played goalkeeper for the Southern Miss women’s soccer team. Bo proudly helped Tod prepare for his tryout, insisting there were no guarantees and that his son should earn his opportunity the same way he had decades earlier. Lanter remained a loyal supporter of Kentucky basketball throughout his life, leaving a legacy defined not only by perseverance as a scholarship walk-on, but also by his entrepreneurial spirit and his family’s enduring connection to the Wildcats.
