Robert B. Hehl, Sr. 94 years and 8.5 months, of LaGrange, Kentucky passed away on February 16, 2017 at his home with his son Richard at his side. He was born in Louisville, Ky on May 29, 1922. Mr. Hehl is preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Pherrie Baker Hehl, and his wife of 62 years Audrey Covington Hehl (June 09, 2015). He is survived by: sons Robert B. Hehl, Jr. (Marcella) and Richard Hehl (Kathy) and her brother Coleman Covington (Margie).

WWII VETERAN

He enlisted in WWII in July 30, 1940 and was Honorably Discharged from the U.S.N. Receiving Barracks, Naval Training Center, Lido Beach, L.I., N.Y. and from the Naval Service of the United States August 6, 1945 (5 year and 7 days). He was discharged as a Gunner’s Mate First Class USN.

When enlisted he held 6 ratings: AS, S2c, S1c, GM3c, GM2c, GM1c – Gunner’s Mate First Class USN. He served on the following vessels / stations: NRS LOUISVILLE, KY: NTS GT. LAKES ILL: USS COLORADO: RS PEARL HARBOR, TH: SERFORPAC ADMIN (MAB): MINE ASS. BASE WEST LOCH, TH: USS REVENGE: NPRC LIDO BEACH, LI, NY.

He completed Trade School NTSch (Gunner’s Mates and Electric Hydraulic, Wash. D.C.). Character of service EXCELLENT with Final Average: Prof. 3.9 Cond. 4.0. His monthly rate of pay when discharged $119.70. He was furnished 0.05 cents per mile from Long Beach, L. I., N.Y. to Louisville, KY and paid $86.41 (1728.20 miles). TEACHING, COACHING & SCHOOL HISTORY

Bessie Lee Jeffries Abbott (Ben Howard Abbott’s mother) taught Robert and his brother Frank in a two room school house between Pendleton & Sligo, Ky. Robert graduated from Sulphur High School and enlisted in the Navy for WWII. Upon his discharge from the Navy he attended the University of Kentucky playing basketball for Adolph Rupp’s team 1945-1946.

He acquired Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Boyce Bible College degrees. Robert started teaching and coaching in 1949 at Sulphur High School. Then when Henry County consolidated Sulphur High and New Castle High to form Henry Central, he moved to LaGrange High School. When Oldham County consolidated LaGrange High and Crestwood High to form Oldham County High School (OCHS), Robert became OCHS’s first basketball coach. He took the OCHS team to the Sweet Sixteen for the first time a team had gone to the state tournament since 1927 from LaGrange High School.

The Kentucky Teachers Retired System (KTRS) shows 38 years retirement: July 1949 to July 1982 (33 years) plus 5 years WWII for a total of 38 years of service to the USA / Kentucky Students. He served as a Principal, Teacher, Coach, Athletic Director, and Director of Pupil Personnel along with many committees including KRTA representative. He loved sports playing basketball, baseball (coaching Little & Babe Ruth Leagues), golf, fast pitch softball, ping pong, and boxed in the Navy.

MARRIAGE & CHRISTIAN SERVICE

Robert B. Hehl was married to Audrey B. Covington by A. L. Meacham on June 10, 1953 in LaGrange, Ky. Robert served in most all of positions over some 60 plus years with DeHaven and its predecessor, DeHaven Memorial as follows: Deacon, Chairman of Deacons, Sunday School Teacher, Sunday School Director, Finance Committee, Personnel Committee, Long Range Planning Committee, Pastor Search Committee, By-Laws Committee, Together We Build Committee, Transition Committee, and planting of Rolling Hills Baptist Mission.

A DeHaven member stated who knew him over 50 years, Bob never turned down any job that was asked of him. His dependability was impeccable. 100% attendance to all meetings, and always on time. Never abrasive with his comments or opinions. As Bro Meacham used to say “He could always disagree without being disagreeable” Unwavering in his belief of basic moral and spiritual standards.

CELEBRATE LIFE MEMORIAL SERVICE

A Celebrate Life Memorial Service will be held on Saturday April 29, 2017, 2:00 pm at DeHaven Baptist Church, 300 W Main Street, LaGrange, KY 40031.

On This Day In UK Basketball History

On March 28, 1992, in what many called the “best NCAA Tournament game ever,” Kentucky takes defending NCAA champion Duke into overtime before losing 104-103 in the East Regional finals in Philadelphia. A last-second shot by Christian Laettner sends Duke to the Final Four, and breaks the hearts of Wildcat fans everywhere. It is Cawood Ledford’s last game as the “Voice of the Wildcats.”

 

On March 28, 1998, against Stanford, Kentucky rallied from a 10-point second-half deficit, then grabbed a 5-point overtime lead, before fending off the Cardinals to advance to the title game for the third straight season. Jeff Sheppard canned three long-range three-pointers - two in the final three minutes and one in overtime - en route to a career-high 27 points.

 

On March 28, 2014, unranked Kentucky beat No. 5 Louisville 74-69, in the 2014 NCAA Tournament Sweet 16.  Aaron Harrison buried a three-pointer from the left corner with 39 seconds left that put UK ahead to stay before 41,072 in Lucas Oil Stadium.

 

On March 28, 2015, No. 1 Kentucky defeated No. 8 Notre Dame, 68-66, in the 2015 NCAA Tournament Elite Eight.  With its 37-0 record on the line, Kentucky trailed Notre Dame 59-53 with 6:14 left. UK rallied in front of 19,464 fans in Cleveland’s Quicken Loans Arena and preserved its perfect season thanks to a crucial blocked shot by Willie Cauley-Stein and two game-deciding free throws from Andrew Harrison in the final seconds.
