Carlos Toomer was born Carlos Bernard Toomer on July 9, 1972, in Valdosta, Georgia to Evo and Willie Turner.  Toomer played guard at Kentucky from 1990-1992 before transferring to St. Louis after his sophomore season.

In high school, Toomer led his squad to a 36-3 record his senior season and their second consecutive state championship.  He averaged 13.2 points, 6.6 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.8 steals while playing point guard for the first time in his career.  Toomer was named first-team All-State, All-North Half, All-District, and All-County his senior year.  He averaged 10 points and five rebounds as a junior, one of five players to average in double figures.

Toomer verbally committed to Kentucky on October 31, 1989.  He made it official by signing on November 8, 1989, despite there was little known about him.  There were questions from recruiting analysts about his ability.  He could not be found in the directories of high school All-Americans. He was prospected as a point guard in college but had very little experience playing that position in high school.  He was not offered scholarships from home state schools Ole Miss, Mississippi State, and Southern Mississippi.  And he wasn’t even the best prospect at his high school.  His teammate Steve Davis was recruited by several schools, including UK.  Toomer joined Jamal Mashburn and Gimel Martinez in that year’s recruiting class.

As a freshman in the 1990-91 season, he played in 12 games, accumulating a total of 57 minutes on the court. His shooting statistics indicate that he made 16 field goals out of 22 attempts, with a percentage of 72.22. He also attempted 6 three-pointers, making 3, which gives him a 50% success rate. In terms of free throws, he attempted 5 and made 4, with a percentage of 80%. Toomer’s total rebounds, assists, and steals were 8, 6, and 3 respectively, contributing to his overall performance on the court.

As a sophomore, the 1991-92 season saw Toomer playing in 9 games, with a total of 38 minutes played. His shooting statistics improved slightly, with 12 field goals out of 16 attempts, a 75% success rate. He attempted 9 three-pointers, making 3, which is a 33.33% success rate. His free throw attempts were 6, with 5 successful attempts, a 83.33% success rate. Toomer’s total rebounds, assists, and steals were 11, 7, and 3 respectively.

Pitino suspended Toomer for four games in February of 1992 for an unspecified team violation.

After playing only 38 minutes total his sophomore season, Toomer announced, on May 1, 1992, that he would be transferring from Kentucky to St. Louis.
