Eric Manuel was born on December 21, 1968, in Macon, Georgia.
Manuel attended Southwest High School in Macon, where he showcased his basketball talent, earning recognition as a First-team Parade All-American in 1987 and a Third-team Parade All-American in 1986.
In 1987, Manuel joined the University of Kentucky Wildcats as a small forward/shooting guard. He quickly became a key player, starting by mid-season and earning a spot on the All-Southeastern Conference Freshman Team.
However, his collegiate career faced a significant setback in 1989. The NCAA investigated allegations that Manuel had cheated on his ACT exam, leading to his ban from NCAA competition. This incident was part of a broader investigation into the Kentucky basketball program, resulting in the university receiving three years of probation and other sanctions.
He transferred to Hiwassee Junior College in Tennessee.
