Fred McLane was born Frederick Louis McLane, Jr. on April 11, 1908, in Newport, Kentucky to Frederick Lewis McLane, Sr. and Emma Kisker McLane.  McLane was a forward for the University of Kentucky Wildcats from 1928 to 1930. McLane was listed as 5 feet 11 inches tall and weighed 173 pounds.

Before joining the University of Kentucky, McLane showcased his basketball talents at Newport High School. Notably, he was named to the 1925 State All-Tournament Team during his high school career, highlighting his significant impact on the court.

During his tenure with the Wildcats, McLane contributed to the team’s performance in the late 1920s. He was a member of the freshman team in 1926-27, then earned varsity letters for three consecutive seasons: 1928, 1929, and 1930.  He was also a member of Pi Kappa Alpha social fraternity and led the track team in points his junior year.

McLane graduated from UK in 1931 with a Bachelor of Arts in Education.

He was a retired insurance agent for National Life and Accident. He enlisted as a private during World War II, August 17, 1942 in Cincinnati, Ohio.  He was discharged as a first lieutenant on December 11, 1945.

His father Fred L. McLane was mayor of Newport from 1928-32.

McLane died May 19, 1988, at the age of 80.  He is buried at St. Stephen Cemetery in Ft. Thomas, Kentucky.

On This Day in UK Basketball History

On March 2, 1970, Dan Issel scored 42 points against Auburn.

 

On March 2, 1991, before a crowd of 24,310, the then-largest crowd in Rupp arena history, the Wildcats closed out the 1990-91 season with a 22-6 overall record. Although UK was ineligible for the SEC title because of probation, the Wildcats secured the best record in the league (14-4) with a 114-93 win over Auburn to end its two-year probation. A ceremony and parade followed.

 

On March 2, 1996, with a 101-63 victory over Vanderbilt in Rupp Arena on Senior Day, UK became the first team in 40 years to finish with a perfect record in the SEC, a 16-0 sweep. It was the Wildcats’ 25th win in a row, tying the school record for consecutive wins in a season. Two games later, they set the new record at 27 games.

 

On March 2, 2012, Darius Miller, in his final performance at Rupp Arena, led Kentucky in scoring with 17 points on Senior Night in a 30-point win over Georgia.
