George Atkins was born on July 10, 1941, in Hopkinsville, Kentucky, to George L. Atkins Sr. and Mary Frances “Frances” Shaver Atkins. A 6-foot-6 center-forward, Atkins starred at Hopkinsville High School, where he earned All-State honors and scored 1,621 career points, including a 40-point game while topping the 30-point mark a dozen times. He accepted a basketball scholarship to the University of Kentucky, where he became the regular center on Harry Lancaster’s freshman team during the 1959–60 season. Atkins averaged 11.4 points in 14 games, finished fourth in scoring and second in rebounding, and earned his freshman numerals. Kentucky coach Adolph Rupp praised him as “a marvelous prospect because of his desire” and later expressed confidence that he could develop into a dependable reserve.

Atkins spent the 1960–61 season as an intentional redshirt while working to develop physically and gain experience before joining Rupp’s varsity squad in 1961–62. Appearing in seven varsity games, he totaled five points and seven rebounds before graduating from the University of Kentucky in 1963 with a degree in business. Throughout his life, Atkins credited Coach Rupp and the university with helping prepare him for the opportunities that followed.

Following graduation, Atkins built a distinguished career in business, consulting, and public service. He served as mayor of Hopkinsville, Kentucky State Auditor of Public Accounts, Finance Secretary, and Secretary of the Governor’s Cabinet. A past president of the University of Kentucky Alumni Association, he remained an active supporter of his alma mater while participating in numerous civic, charitable, professional, and educational organizations.

Atkins passed away on April 14, 2024. Remembered for his leadership, integrity, and lifelong service to the Commonwealth, he left a legacy that extended far beyond the basketball court.
