Obituary – Ky. Basketball Star Gordon George Dies, Chattanooga (TN) Free Press (December 13, 1997)

Gordon L. George of Chattanooga, who played basketball at the University of Kentucky on coach Adolph Rupp’s first championship team in 1933, died Friday, Dec. 12, 1997. He was 85.

The Kentucky native was employed in the coal industry in Kentucky and West Virginia.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Otto and James George.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia Raney George; a daughter, Kathy Shupe, Chattanooga; a son, Sam George, Port St. John, Fla.; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held in Kentucky.
