Grant Darbyshire was born on April 15, 2003, in Florence,  to Dana and Gregg Darbyshire.  He has five siblings: Bryce, Lola, Cash, Jeff, and Cove.  His father played basketball at Kent State and Miami (OH).  His grandfather, Lynn, played  and competed in track at  State and Miami (OH).

Darbyshire served as a captain for Sycamore as a senior and helped lead the team to the Greater Miami Conference championship.  His team amassed a 20-3 record, which was the best in school history.  They were also district runners-up after getting off to a 9-0 start, the best in school history.  Darbyshire shot 43% from 3-point range as a junior and had 14 points and six boards against Middleton on Senior Night.  He also participated in soccer and baseball for Sycamore.  Darbyshire was a summa cum laude graduate and was also a National Merit Scholar Commended.

Grant Darbyshire chose Kentucky over Kansas, Cincinnati, College of Charleston, Xavier, Indiana, and Miami (OH).

As a freshman, Darbyshire did not appear in any games in his first season at UK.  He dealt with a right leg injury, but was active late in the season.  He was named to First-Year SEC Honor Roll.

As a sophomore, Darbyshire saw action in four games.  He made appearances in victories over Marshall, Louisville, Illinois State and on the road at Vanderbilt.  He was an SEC Winter Academic Honor Roll member.

Walter Cornett, of Glendale, Kentucky, is the owner and operator of Walter’s Wildcat World. He founded WildcatWorld.com in 1998 making it one of the oldest Kentucky basketball fan sites in operation today.

On This Day in UK Basketball History

On December 29, 1986, following the Wildcats’ 85-51 win at Louisville on Dec. 27, more than 19,000 fans filled Freedom Hall for a Kentucky practice to usher in the era of school-boy legend Rex Chapman.

 

On December 29, 2001, No. 6 Kentucky defeated Louisville, 82-62.  A Rupp Arena crowd of 24,330 was calling for vengeance when former UK Coach Rick Pitino returned to Lexington for the first time as head coach of the Cardinals. Tayshaun Prince (18 points) and Keith Bogans (17) led a dismantling of Pitino’s overmatched team.

 

On December 29, 2009, freshman point guard John Wall set a school record with 16 assists as Kentucky crushed Hartford 104-61.

 

On December 29, 2016, freshman Malik Monk scored 34 points at Ole Miss.
