Henry Besuden

Henry Besuden was born Henry Carlisle Besuden II on September 12, 1904, in Winchester, Kentucky, to Henry Carlisle Besuden and Mary Calloway French. He graduated from Clark County High School in 1923 before enrolling at the University of Kentucky, where the 6-foot-3 Winchester native studied agriculture and joined the basketball program as a center.

Besuden made his varsity debut during the 1924–25 season under head coach C. O. Applegran. He appeared in two games for a Kentucky team that finished 13–8, gaining experience that prepared him for a much larger role the following winter.

As a senior in 1925–26, Besuden appeared in 15 games and scored 38 points for coach Ray Eklund’s Wildcats. Kentucky finished 15–3, won 15 of its final 16 games and claimed the Southern Conference championship. Besuden supplied valuable size in the frontcourt as the Wildcats established themselves among the leading teams in the South.

His most memorable performance came in the Southern Conference Tournament semifinals against Georgia on February 27, 1926. Besuden scored a career-high nine points, including four field goals, as Kentucky defeated the Bulldogs 39–34 and advanced to the championship game. He also scored nine points earlier that season at Indiana. Across his two varsity seasons, Besuden played in 17 games and scored 38 points.

Besuden belonged to Kappa Sigma fraternity and earned his bachelor’s degree in agriculture from Kentucky in 1926. When the Clark County farm he had inherited faced a lien and possible sale, he purchased 70 Southdown sheep to clear its weeds and help restore the soil. That practical solution became the foundation of an extraordinary career: Besuden transformed Vinewood Farm into an internationally known breeding operation and became one of the foremost Southdown sheep breeders of his era. Between 1950 and 1971, his sheep won 12 grand championships in 18 appearances at the International Live Stock Exposition.

Besuden served as president of the National Sheep Association and the American Southdown Association, sat on the International Livestock Exposition’s board of directors and served for six years as a director of the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland. His other positions included director of the Hurst Home Insurance Company and Peoples Commercial Bank, membership on the Kentucky Governor’s Commission on Agriculture and service on the University of Kentucky Board of Trustees. His honors included the Green Pasture Award for conservation, UK’s Golden Sheaf Award for agricultural achievement, the 1965 Centennial Athletic Medallion and induction into the UK Hall of Distinguished Alumni in 1975. His portrait was hung in Chicago’s prestigious Saddle and Sirloin Club in 1971, one of the livestock industry’s highest distinctions.

Besuden was married to the former Beverly Hodgkin, with whom he had two sons. He died on December 31, 1985, leaving a legacy that extended far beyond the basketball court and made him one of the University of Kentucky’s most distinguished agricultural alumni.
