Jake Gaiser

Jake Gaiser was born Jacob Henry Gaiser on August 17, 1890, in Peach Grove, Kentucky, the son of Johanne Gaiser and Elisabetha “Lizzie” Nagel. He had an older brother, John Henry Gaiser. Known in university records as both Jake and Jack, he attended Lexington High School and was later listed as a resident of Covington. At the State University of Kentucky, Gaiser earned a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering degree in 1912, completed a thesis titled “Modern Gas Producer,” and collaborated with Robert Leslie Jones on an experimental study of steam-radiator efficiency. He belonged to Kappa Sigma, represented the fraternity on the Pan-Hellenic Council, served as secretary of the student branch of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers, and was a member of Lamp and Cross and Mystic Thirteen.

Gaiser played basketball for Kentucky from 1909–10 through 1911–12 and captained the Wildcats during each of his final two seasons. A tenacious right guard, he became known for his aggressive defense, toughness and ability to inspire his teammates. During a 1911 road game at Otterbein, he remained in the lineup despite an injured arm that he could not lift. In a 47–22 victory over Georgetown that February, he scored five field goals while holding his opponent to one. After another win over Transylvania, the university newspaper called him the best guard in Kentucky, described him as one of the most determined basketball players in the South and credited his winning spirit with lifting the Wildcats.

He completed his career by captaining Kentucky’s celebrated 1911–12 team to a 9–0 record, recognition as Southern champion and the first undefeated season in program history. One of Gaiser’s best recorded performances came on January 12, 1912, when he scored 10 points in a 32–13 victory over Central University. He also helped preserve the perfect campaign with a 19–18 road victory over Georgetown. Fifty years later, while living in Brooklyn, New York, he was invited to be honored with the surviving members of that historic team during Kentucky’s first basketball “K-Night.”

Gaiser was also a prominent football player for Kentucky, appearing at end, halfback and quarterback while handling punting and return duties. Contemporary accounts praised his grit, hard work, sure tackling and ability to break up interference, and a composite of selections by Kentucky newspapers and coaches placed him at quarterback on the 1910 All-Kentucky team. In Kentucky’s 1911 Thanksgiving Day victory over Tennessee, he returned a punt for a touchdown, one of the most memorable plays of his football career.
