John Everett was born John Chenoweth Everett, Jr. in Maysville, Kentucky on February 21, 1900, to Anna Boynton Burgess Everett and John Chenoweth Everett, Sr.
As a boy, he was a student in the city schools, the preparatory academy of the South at Sewanee, Tennessee, and then completed his education at the University of Kentucky where he gained recognition in basketball as captain of the Wildcats.
Everett entered the University of Kentucky in September 1918, enlisting in the Students’ Reserve Corps. During his time at the University of Kentucky, Everett played as a center-forward for the Wildcats. Nicknamed “Chen,” Everett was a long, tall, rangy lad, who, as a Freshman, probably pointed more for the Cats than any other man on the team. He was known for his strong presence on the court and his ability to score points. Everett’s most notable season was 1918-1919, where he scored a career-high 18 points in a game against Centre College. He was captain of the basketball team for the 1919-1920 season as a sophomore. He became stricken with the flu before the end of the season and only saw action in eight games. He played a total of 21 games for the Wildcats, scoring 129 points over two seasons.
After graduating from the University of Kentucky, Everett continued to be involved in his community and various business and social programs in Maysville. He was a civic leader and contributed significantly to the development of his hometown.
John Everett passed away on January 8, 1955, leaving behind a legacy of athletic achievement and community service.
