34 John Pelphrey

John Pelphrey was born on July 18, 1968, in Paintsville, Kentucky. A standout at Paintsville High School, the 6-foot-7 forward-guard scored 2,477 career points and collected 1,318 rebounds while leading the Tigers to three regional championships and three appearances in Kentucky’s Sweet Sixteen. A three-time All-State selection, Parade All-American, and 1987 Kentucky Mr. Basketball, Pelphrey arrived in Lexington as one of the Commonwealth’s most accomplished high school players.

Pelphrey redshirted during the 1987–88 season before becoming a cornerstone of Kentucky’s resurgence under Rick Pitino. A two-time team captain and member of the legendary “Unforgettables,” he helped lead the Wildcats from NCAA probation back to national prominence. As a senior, he earned First Team All-SEC honors and honorable mention All-America recognition while finishing his career with 1,257 points and 90 starts in 114 games. His No. 34 jersey was later retired by the university.

Pelphrey saved some of his finest performances for the 1992 NCAA Tournament. He scored 20 points with seven assists in a second-round victory over Iowa State, added 18 points and four steals against Massachusetts in the Sweet Sixteen, and contributed 16 points in Kentucky’s unforgettable overtime battle with Duke in the Elite Eight, one of the most celebrated games in college basketball history. During the Wildcats’ four-game tournament run, he averaged more than 19 points per game while shooting better than 63 percent from the field.

After a brief professional playing career in France and Spain, Pelphrey entered coaching. He has served as head coach at South Alabama, Arkansas, and Tennessee Tech, while also holding assistant coaching positions at Oklahoma State, Marshall, Florida, Alabama, and other Division I programs, continuing a lifelong connection to the game.
