Larry Miller was born Larry S. Miller on April 10, 1951 in Daviess County, Kentucky to Bernard Miller and Marie Foster Miller.  He was part of the University of Kentucky Wildcats during the 1971–72 season. Standing 6-foot-3 and weighing 180 pounds, he played as a guard. Miller hailed from Owensboro, Kentucky, and attended Daviess County High School before joining the Wildcats.

As a freshman in 1970-71, Miller played for the freshman team and was an assistant manager of the varsity team.

Miller made the varsity roster as a sophomore.  During the 1971–72 season under Coach Adolph Rupp, the Kentucky Wildcats achieved a 21–7 record, winning the Southeastern Conference (SEC) championship and advancing to the NCAA Tournament’s Elite Eight. While Miller was part of this successful team, detailed individual statistics regarding his contributions during the season are limited.

Miller graduated from UK with a bachelor of arts in education in 1974.  He then graduated with a masters in 1976.
