Obituary – Dr. Lloyd Ramsey, Lexington Herald-Leader (October 31, 2016)

RAMSEY Dr. Lloyd Hamilton, 95, died Saturday, October 29, 2016, in Nashville Tennessee. Born June 10, 1921 in Lexington, Kentucky to the late James Chandler and Hattie O. (Frisbee) Ramsey. Dr. Ramsey was a graduate of University High School and the University of Kentucky where he played basketball under Coach Adolph Rupp (1940-1942) and was a member of the golf team. He won the Lexington City Golf Tournament in 1938, 1939, 1940, and 1946. He was a Major in the U.S. Army, Infantry Division from 1942-1946.

Dr. Ramsey received his Doctorate of Medicine from Washington University in 1950. He interned at Duke, was an Assistant Resident and Fellow at Harvard, and a Research Fellow at Vanderbilt University where he continued his career as professor, researcher, Chief of Medical Staff, Associate Dean, Associate Vice Chancellor, Associate Chair, Director, and Professor Emeritus. His early work on pulmonary function and the diffusion of fluid and gas in the lung received international recognition.

Dr. Ramsey was a Diplomat of the American Board of Internal Medicine, Member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Sigma Xi, New York Academy of Science, American Clinical and Climatological Association, Nashville Academy of Medicine, American Medical Association and Tennessee Medical Association. He served on many community organizations including the Middle Tennessee Heart Association, Basic Science Council of the American Heart Association, Tennessee Heart Association, Tennessee/Mid-South Regional Medical Program, Monroe Harding Children’s Home, Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce, and the Nashville University Council.

Dr. Ramsey is survived by his wife of 33 years, Marie-Luise Erichson Ramsey (Malu) with Andrea, Phillipp and Vanessa of Hanover and Hamburg, Germany. Dr. Ramsey was preceded in death by his first wife, June Clarke Byars Ramsey. He is survived by their children Anne of Franklin TN, Robert (Tami) of Lexington, KY, Craig (Jeannine) of Mt. Juliet, TN, and Frances of Harrisburg, AK, and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Visitation Tuesday 11am. Memorial Service to follow at noon. Mt. Olivet Funeral Home, Nashville, Tennessee. Memorial contributions may be made to Vanderbilt University Ingram Cancer Center or the ALS Association.
