Mark Halsell was born on July 2, 1988, to Mark and Vicki Halsell.
In high school, Halsell was a National Honors Society member and a state competitor in basketball and track and field. He averaged eight points, three assists, one steal, and three rebounds per game in his senior season at St. Charles High School where he attended high school with fellow Wildcat Josh Harrellson.
Halsell redshirted his freshman season of junior college basketball at Southwestern Illinois Junior College.
Halsell was a walk-on at Kentucky during the 2008-09 season. He played 10 minutes total for the season knocking down one three-pointer on December 22, 2008, against Tennessee State.
Halsell transferred to Park University after John Calipari took over as Kentucky coach.
