Marquis Teague was born Marquis Devante Teague on February 28, 1993, in Indianapolis, Indiana to Shawn and Carol Teague. His brother, Jeff, played for Wake Forest and in the NBA.
In high school, Teague averaged 22.7 points, 5.9 assists, and 4.2 rebounds for Pike High School in Indianapolis. He was one of five finalists for the Naismith Award for the national high school player of the year. He was a Parade fourth-team All-American and was ranked seventh by ESPNU’s Top 100, seventh overall by Scout.com, and fifth by Rivals.com. Teague received McDonald’s All-American Honors in 2011 and scored nine points with three assists in the McDonald’s All-American Game. He scored 14 points with seven assists in the Jordan Brand Classic All-American Game. Teague also scored six points with three assists and four rebounds for the USA team in the Nike Hoops Summit. He scored 18 points with 5 assists in the Kentucky-Indiana All-Star Game, including the game-winning jump shot with 0.9 seconds left.
Teague committed to Kentucky on April 22, 2010. He chose Kentucky over Cincinnati, Indiana, Louisville, Ohio State, and Purdue. “I’m going there to win a national championship and get a good education. If I’m fortunate enough for something like (the NBA) to happen, that would be great, but that’s not my main focus,” said Teague.
As a freshman at Kentucky, Teague started all 40 games and averaged 10.0 points and a team-high 4.8 assists per game in helping the Wildcats to the 2012 national championship. He scored 14 points in the title game win over Kansas to go along with three assists and recorded eight points with five assists in a win over Louisville. He tallied 14 points with seven assists in a win over Indiana and scored a career-high 24 points with seven assists in a win over Iowa State. Teague scored 13 points while dishing out a team-high eight assists with only one turnover in a win at Vandy and recorded his first career double-double with 12 points and a career-high 10 assists in a win over Florida. He passed out a career-high nine assists and added seven points in a win over Arkansas and had a career-high 17 points and a team-high four assists in a win over South Carolina. One of Teague’s best performances of the season came against Portland, a game where he scored 14 points, had a career-high of eight assists, and a career-high of 4 steals, all while committing no turnovers and shooting 5 of 6 from the free throw line.
On April 17, 2012, Freshmen Anthony Davis, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, and Marquis Teague, and sophomores Terrence Jones and Doron Lamb declared for the 2012 NBA draft in a nationally televised news conference. Teague was selected as the 29th overall pick in the 2012 NBA Draft by the Chicago Bulls.
