Nathaniel Buis was born Nathaniel Aaron Buis in Casey County, Kentucky on December 22, 1924, to Roscoe and Alice Hiter Buis.

Buis was a 5’10” guard who played for the University of Kentucky Wildcats men’s basketball team during the 1943–1944 season under coach Adolph Rupp. In that season, he appeared in 12 games, averaging 2.6 points per game.

Buis entered the Navy following his freshman season at Kentucky.  When he returned home from the Navy, he enrolled in college at Western Kentucky in Bowling Green.  Buis received his bachelor’s and master’s degree from WKU.

He was a retired superintendent of the Casey County school system and a former principal at Middleburg and Casey high schools. He was also a coach at Liberty High School. He was a member of Liberty First Christian Church and a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

Buis died from cancer on March 2, 2000, at the age of 76.
