40 Souleymane Camara

Souleymane Camara was born on July 23, 1979, in Dakar, Senegal. Known to teammates and fans as “Jules,” the 6-foot-11 forward came to the United States to attend nationally renowned Oak Hill Academy in Mouth of Wilson, Virginia, where he developed into a highly regarded college prospect under legendary coach Steve Smith. His combination of length, athleticism, and defensive ability made him an attractive addition to Tubby Smith’s recruiting class as Kentucky continued to build one of the nation’s deepest frontcourts.

Camara spent five years at Kentucky from 1998 through 2003, playing four seasons after sitting out the 2000-01 campaign. He developed into a dependable interior presence whose energy, rebounding, and shot-blocking complemented the Wildcats’ talented roster. Whether starting or coming off the bench, Camara earned a reputation for doing the difficult work around the basket and helping Kentucky remain one of the SEC’s elite programs during the Tubby Smith era. He appeared in 136 career games for the Wildcats, providing steady production and veteran leadership throughout his career.

One of Camara’s most memorable stretches came during the 1999-2000 season, when he emerged as an increasingly important contributor in SEC play before a foot injury sidelined him for several weeks. He returned to help Kentucky down the stretch and finished his career as a respected veteran whose defense and hustle made him a valuable piece of several NCAA Tournament teams. Following his time at Kentucky, Camara continued his professional basketball career overseas, playing internationally after leaving Lexington.
